On February 14, 2015 The Junia Project partnered with Neighborhood Christian Fellowship, Azusa Pacific Seminary, The Wesleyan Church, The Free Methodist Church of Southern California, and The Friends Center at APS to host Celebrating Women in Leadership. It was a wonderful morning with over 200 people in attendance!

Our main speaker for the day was Dr. Jo Anne Lyon, General Superintendent of the Wesleyan Church, who shared some of her experiences being the leader of the denomination.
My favorite quotes from Dr. Lyon:
“If women are not at the table, we need a new table!”
“Power and authority is a Lordship issue, not a gender issue.”
“The only woman Jesus calls daughter was the one who had the imagination to touch him, against all cultural rules.”
Jeanelle Austin shared an original spoken word piece she wrote just for the event!
My favorite quote from Jeanelle:
“It’s a crying shame that the church holds onto ceilings of glass, when God created this world for men and women, free of social class.”
We also heard from Dr. Scott Daniels, Dean of Azusa Pacific Seminary.
Favorite quote from Dr. Daniels:
“For many of us, our failure to embrace women is not a failure of theology, but a failure of imagination.”
One of my favorite parts of the morning was the time I got to spend with our wonderful panel! Thank you Deborah, Tim, Heidi, Jannet, Kay, and Shawna for your wonderful insight and encouraging words!
BrowderSister did an amazing job leading us in worship!
The sponsors gave away amazing resources on theology and egalitarianism! Special thanks to Hope Forti and Soulation for joining us and donating such great resources (one of which was highlighted in a recent post)!
And a great time was had by all!
Thank you Dave Johnson and Carmeli Silva for all your hard work in planning this event! Thanks also to Megan Burroughs, Courtney Frybarger, Leif Nunneley, Hannah Gaddini, Sarah Hyde, and all the volunteers! We couldn’t have done it without you!
My favorite quote from Pastor Dave:
“We won’t have an Acts 2 church until our daughters are prophesying.”
Thank you to everyone who came! It was a wonderful, spirit-filled celebration of women in leadership!

Great update! … we celebrate with you and your team. And pray this is a ‘first-fruits-like’ gathering in many life giving ways.
Smiled reading this entire report! “The only woman Jesus calls daughter was the one who had the imagination to touch him, against all cultural rules.” We’ve just started attending a Wesleyan church, and it’s such a a blessing to have JoAnne Lyons leading and shepherding the denomination.
*very proud
you guys are doing such a wonderful job…
I love this report from the conference. Yay for everyone involved in putting it on and for those who attended too!
Thanks for this quote too: “If women are not at the table, we need a new table!” Here’s to getting a great big new table.
Hi, Tim! Thanks for the kudos. I hope you are considering coming down in July for the CBE Conference. We would love to meet you!
Praise God! It’s so encouraging to hear all that the Lord is doing through Junia Project and see the success of your latest gala. You don’t know how much I wanted to be there. Almost boarded a plane from NYC. — Grace
Thanks, Grace! We learned a lot from doing an event this size – it’s a lot of work, for one thing. Looking forward to seeing you in July at the CBE conference – now THAT will be a great time!
