Friends, we have never asked for money and we don’t intend to anytime in the near future! But Christians for Biblical Equality (CBE) has been instrumental in helping us deepen our understanding of the biblical basis for women’s equality. With that said….
Here are five reasons we’re donating to CBE through Give to the Max, an annual one-day event sponsored by the state of Minnesota, and why we hope you will consider giving as well:
1) “Mothership” of the Christian egalitarian movement
Started in 1988 by some of the founders of the evangelical egalitarian movement, CBE has been a key player in the ongoing pushback against the complementarian movement. Some history:
“Disturbed by the shallow biblical premise used by churches, organizations, and mission groups to exclude the gifts of women, evangelical leaders assembled in 1987 to publish their biblical perspective in a new scholarly journal, Priscilla Papers. Included in the group were Gilbert Bilezikian, Stanley Gundry, Gretchen Gaebelein Hull, Catherine Clark Kroeger, Jo Anne Lyon, and Roger Nicole. The group determined that a national organization was needed to provide education, support, and leadership…”
2) Priscilla Papers
Priscilla Papers is the “academic voice” of CBE, a journal providing interdisciplinary evangelical scholarship on topics related to a biblical view of gender equality and justice. Check out: Does the New Testament Name Only Men as Local Church Officers? by Phil Payne. Most articles are available online for free, with the last few years of content reserved for CBE members and subscribers. Here is a link to the archives.
3) Mutuality Magazine
Mutuality is the “popular voice” of CBE, providing inspiration, encouragement, and practical information on mutuality between men and women in the home, church, and world. A favorite: Have They Disappeared? Why do young evangelicals know so little about the great women of the Bible? by Andy Motz. As with Priscilla Papers, most articles are available online for free, with the most recent content reserved for members and subscribers. Visit the archives.
3) Annual Conference
CBE has sponsored conferences on the theological and practical aspects of Christian egalitarianism since 1989! We don’t know of another organization with this kind of track record. This year “Becoming New: Man and Woman Together in Christ” will be held on July 24–26 at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel. The Junia Project admin team will be there and we’d love to meet you.
4) Online Bookstore
There is an amazing array of resources at CBE’s online bookstore – digital downloads, CDs, DVDs, books, curriculum, rare and exclusive titles, journals, book reviews. If you’re looking for something on anything related to equality, this is the place to start.
5) Your Donation Will Be Doubled Today
A donor has committed matching funds up to $38,000+, so even the smallest gift will make a difference. Click on the button to go to the Give to the Max site.
Thanks in advance for your generosity! Oh,and while you’re at it, you might as well join CBE and start receiving Mutuality and Priscilla Papers!
